The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency of Indonesia (BMKG) is hopeful that the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) in Bali will foster a political agreement among the attending leaders to address the challenges posed by the climate crisis and climate change.
The event is scheduled to occur from May 18 to May 25, 2024.
During an online seminar on Monday, the head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, highlighted that according to global climate institutions, the prevailing climatic and weather conditions remain unpredictable, primarily due to unchecked emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Such climatic unpredictability may lead to extreme weather phenomena, including droughts and unusually high rainfall, which in turn can degrade social and public health conditions, impacting the economic stability of nations.
“This is one of the important substances for WWF in Bali because most countries in the world have felt the impact of climate change, which means that water availability must be maintained for the common good,” Karnawati explained.
She further mentioned that the forum aims to secure a political agreement from 30 participant nations, necessitating a commitment to implement measures to tackle the potential climate crisis.
This agreement is anticipated to be a significant result of the forum, reflecting the collective commitment of the participants to put into action the scientifically prepared plans based on ecosystems and natural phenomena by their respective countries, Karnawati reported.
According to her, a definitive action plan will address climate change and bridge the divide between the varying capacities of countries to manage resources related to water, climate, food, energy, and health.
“Each country has different capabilities in handling this matter. The lack of knowledge in science and technology makes the gap even more complex. Now, we can end it by working together to tackle the climate crisis,” she stated.
The 10th World Water Forum is themed “Water for Shared Prosperity,” and is divided into six sub-themes:
- Water for humans and nature
- Water security and prosperity
- Disaster risk reduction and mitigation
- Governance cooperation and hydro diplomacy
- Sustainable water finance
- Knowledge and innovation
The forum will also facilitate dialogues among stakeholders from various regions, including the Mediterranean, Asia-Pacific, America, and Africa, along with members of the World Water Council, to explore mechanisms and strategies for addressing water-related challenges.
